CHANDIGARH: There seems no end to the auctions of Chandigarh-based heritage furniture at the international level. Following a major furniture auction of both Le Corbusier and his second cousin, Pierre Jeanneret-designed various furniture items at Marseilles, France, on November 3, another Paris-based auction-house, Artcurial, is going to sell Chandigarh's heritage on November 22.

Artcurial auction-house's website reveals that a rare and state-of-the-art cane-and-teakwood square dining table would come under hammer at a hotel site. The estimated cost for this ensemble heritage marvel has been fixed between 12,000 and 16,000 Euros. In the catalogue, designed by Jeannret, is said to be sourced from the office buildings of the city. Another heritage furniture piece, a pair of two cane-and-teak wood easy armchairs a?? designed by Jeannret a?? has been priced between 4000 and 6000 Euro. This is sourced from private residences and administrative buildings of the city.
While the dining table was designed by Pierre Jeanneret in the year 1958 in Chandigarh, another heritage piece of two easy armchairs was designed by him in 1955-56. In the last heritage furniture auction at Marseilles in France, 30 different pieces were sold for Rs 1.92 crore with a committee table and coffee table fetching highest costs of Rs 42 and Rs 41 lakh respectively.
Incidentally, for the past two years, a large number of Pierre Jeannret-designed heritage furniture items have been sold at many international auction-houses at New York, Paris, London at other places.
